Suffering from Generator/Compressor/Motor/Pump Vibrations.

Putting an end to Generator/Compressor/Motor/Pump Vibrations.

Many machines are generating vibrations and these vibrations are damaging the internal parts, bearing, gears and shafts of the machine. Vibrations in Generators can travel through an entire building structure and cause annoyance and constant irritation to the building inhabitants. Similarly, a large compressor mounted on a factory rooftop can create massive vibrations during intermittent start-ups and stops. While you can reduce vibrations in these machines by following proper maintenance schedules, the truth is that eventually when the machine (generator or compressor or motor or pump) gets older, the maintenance costs and maintenance downtime increases. In this case, vibrations are not totally UN-avoidable. The machines will vibrate. But what can be easily accomplished is mounting the machine on new Anti-Vibration Mounts. The Anti-Vibration Mounts are made from vibration absorbing materials like springs, rubber or air. The major advantage of these Anti-Vibration mounts is that while they do not stop the actual vibrations inside the machine, they can effectively isolate all vibrations being produced by the machine. In other words, the vibrations produced by the machine are not transmitted beyond the Anti-Vibration Mounts.
Let's look at the diagram below illustrating the vibration isolation property of the Anti-Vibration Mounts. The diagram shows the side-view of a Genset installed on our Anti-Vibration Mounts (AV Mounts). While the Generator vibrates and makes the liquid placed on top of it to vibrate vigorously, the bottom frame of the generator is vibration isolated.
AntiVibration Mounts for a Generator/Compressor/Motor/Pump.
Demonstration of Vibration Isolation by Anti-Vibration Mounts for a Generator/Compressor/Motor/Pump.
The above is the Demonstration  of Vibration Isolation by Anti-Vibration Mounts for a Generator/Compressor/Motor/Pump. We can clearly see that the generator is producing massive vibrations and is thus vibrating the glass full of liquid on top. The generator is further flexibly mounted on Anti-Vibration Mounts with fail-safe design. The Vibrations are transmitted by the generator into the AV Mounts. The AV-mounts being made from high quality elastomeric rubber compounds are able to absorb these vibrations with ease. The design of the Anti-Vibration Mounts is such that there is no direct metal-to-metal path for the vibrations to travel. This vibration isolation is possible using our superior AntiVibration Mounts. Additionally, the design of the Anti-Vibration Mounts plays a critical role in damping Generator / Compressor / Motor / Pump Vibrations. The vibrations in these machines are typically produced due to imbalanced rotation. This results in vibrations that are vertical and horizontal in nature. The Anti-Vibration Mounts should be able to absorb both these vertical and horizontal vibrations in all planes. Apart from these vertical and horizontal vibrations, these machines also produce heavy torsional / rotational vibrations. The Anti-Vibration Mount design should be capable of isolating and absorbing these Rotational Vibrations.
Thus, with the use of simple and effective Anti-Vibration Mounts, we can greatly control, absorb and isolate the harmful and annoying vibrations that get transmitted from these machines. Another added advantage of these Anti-Vibration Mounts is the reduction in noise transmission as the vibration is effectively controlled and isolated.

10 main reasons for Vibrations in Pumps - Anti-Vibration Mounts for Pumps

Anti-Vibration Mounts isolating pump vibrations
Vibration exists in all pumps and indeed all rotating machines. Pumps produce vibrations in horizontal and vertical planes and also exert centrifugal and torsional vibrations. All these vibrations can be isolated by using appropriate Anti-Vibration Mounts for mounting these pumps and other rotating machinery. Pump designers (and motor designers) design machines to withstand normal vibration limits. These vibration isolation limits vary by pump type, mounting configuration, power requirements, rotation speed and the type of fluid being pumped. Even these vibration limits are sometimes very high considering the other machinery to be placed in the vicinity of these pumps and thus Anti-Vibration Mounts are required for mounting these pumps.

Excessive vibration in pumps may lead to excessive noise, equipment damage, and premature pump failure due to fatigue.

The 10 Main causes of Vibrations in Pumps and Motors are due to:

Misapplication, design, or manufacturing defect causing vibrations in Pumps.

Corrosion and erosion - Damage from corrosion or erosion may damage impellers or rings, leading to a machine which vibrates beyond acceptable limits.

Imbalance of the Impeller - Impellers should be trimmed and dynamically balanced to the proper diameter at the maximum operating speed. Initial failure to balance the impeller on an existing pump may well cause vibration outside of acceptable areas.

Imbalance of motor rotating element - This is a rare manufacturing flaw.

Coupling out of balance.

Incorrect rotation - While pumps will pump when rotating in the wrong direction, flow and head will be reduced and vibration due to fluid dynamics may result.

Bent shaft - A bent shaft may be caused by a number of field related issues and will result in vibration.

Bearing wear / failure - Lack of lubrication or improper lubrication may hasten bearing wear and cause vibration.

Pipe strain (misalignment between the pump and the piping) - Pipe strain is the number one cause of vibration issues in pumps.

Poor foundation or anchoring - If the pump's foundation is not flat or the baseplate not properly secured or grouted, vibration will be increased. The pump may be mounted on Anti-Vibration mounts to reduce the overall vibration levels being transmitted onto the base plate.

Anti-Vibration Mounts

By Choosing the correct Anti-Vibration Mounts, these vibrations can be greatly reduced and damped.

Genset AV-Mounts - Spring Based or Elastomeric Rubber Based?

We have many of our esteemed customers discussing the Best Anti-Vibration mounts for Diesel Generators. Here, we try to look at the options available and provide comprehensive study and results based on our experience with large OEM manufacturers.

Basically we have found that there are 2 types of vibration mounting systems for Diesel Generators:

★ Spring Based AV Mounts.
★ Elastomeric Rubber Based AV mounts.

Spring Mounts are basically AV Mounts which have metal enclosed body and a single spring or a collection of springs inside for vibration damping. Some Spring AV mounts would also have some damping fluids for achieving faster damping characteristics.  The Spring AV Mounts would have some rated deflection at rated static and dynamic loads.

The Elastomeric Rubber Based AV Mounts on the other hand are typically made from rubber elastomers. These AV Mounts will have metal plates at top and bottom. These metal plates will have the necessary bolting requirements for fixing these mounts onto the diesel engine frame and then mount the engine on top of this mount.

Both the Spring and Elastomeric Rubber based AV Mounts can act as Generator AV Mounts. Do note that these mounts isolate the vibrations that are produced in the generator due to reciprocating motion of piston in the cylinder and unbalance, friction in the bearings and small misalignment in the genset coupling. Both these Spring Based and Elastomer Based isolators (AV Mounts) isolate these vibrations and prevent them to transmitting into the channel and generator frame.

So, how does these two types of AV Mounts actually differ in providing good vibration isolation:

★  The Spring Based AV Mounts typically provide 10-50mm of static deflection. This high static load deflection is useful for providing a very high vibration isolation efficiency of 90-98%. The Elastomeric Rubber Based AV Mounts on the other hand are typically providing 4-10mm of static load deflection and lower vibration isolation efficiency of 75-90%.

For spring AV mounts you will see that the vibration isolation efficiency above is better, the problem is that this vibration isolation efficiency is obtained while continuous machine operation. So, if you have a Diesel Generator that will be running continuously for say 12hours to 24 hours, then Spring mounts will provide better vibration isolation during those working hours. On the other hand, when you switch-on or switch-off a generator mounted on Spring AV Mounts, there will be vigorous jerky movement called 'Headbang'. While mounted on Rubber based AV mounts also, the generator engine moves but gradual movement is damped further by the elastomer.

★  The Spring Based AV Mounts are typically suitable for machine running below 1000 RPM like
HVAC Applications, FANS, High impact producing machine like Presses, Hammers,  etc.The Elastomeric Rubber Based AV Mounts on the other hand are more suitable for machines running above 1000 RPM as these produce higher frequency vibrations. For example closed systems like acoustic gensets, diesel generators, compact digi-sets, compressors, mobile mountings, combustion engines, marine engines etc will be more easily and robustly mounted on Elastomeric AV Mounts.

★  The Design of Spring Based AV Mounts are typically made to absorb high Vertical Vibration Forces. The lateral and centrifugal / torsional vibrations are not effectively isolated using Spring Based AV-Mounts. The design of the Elastomeric AV-Mounts on the other hand can be modified to incorporate damping of vertical, horizontal and centrifugal /torsional vibrations.

★  Another point regarding the design of Spring mounts is their inherent vertical height. To achieve higher static load deflections, the design of spring mounts typically ranges from 50mm to as high as 500mm. This on one hand provides higher Vibration Isolation Efficiency and good mount design, it
also increases the risk of engine toppling and shaky movement due to higher heights. The Center of Gravity (CG) of the Generator system is also raised. An Elastomeric AV mount on the other hand can be as simple as a rubber pad not more than 10mm in height and good Elastomeric Anti-Vibration Mountings for Gensets can be anywhere between 30mm to 100mm.

★ Now comes the most important aspect - economics of the AV Mounts. Typically, Spring Based AV Mounts will be atleast 50% costlier as compared to their counterparts in the elastomeric domain.

The real advantage of Spring Based mounts is their ability to dampen vibrations to the maximum possible extent while still being economical for large manufacturers. The elastomeric mounts are compact, economical and can still perform and deliver very good vibration isolation. We do note that most of the automotive engines are mounted on elastomeric rubber based mountings due to the overall advantage and safety of the elastomeric mounts as described in the discussions above.
We would be discussing about the various vibration measurement standards and their relative definitions for various machines like Gensets, Compressors, HVAC - Air Conditioning Units.
